Jazz is a truly American art form. In the early 1920s, Dixieland jazz emerged from blues, ragtime, West African music, and other musical traditions. Pioneered by Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton and others, Dixieland jazz quickly spread from New Orleans to Chicago, New York, Kansas City and beyond. Over time, big bands increasingly relied on saxophones instead of clarinets and emphasized sectional playing. Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, and others developed national reputations. In the '30s and '40s, some of the best-known singers, such as Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald sang with the big bands. After World War II, big bands gave way to the more complex, rhythmical, and individualized style of bebop, pioneered by Charlie Parker ("Bird") and Dizzy Gillespie and developed further by Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk and others.Since then, jazz has developed in many directions, including cool jazz, Latin jazz, free jazz, and jazz fusion. The stylistic diversity of jazz has only increased in recent years, ranging from virtuoso trumpeter Wynton Marsalis to aggressive acid jazz and electronic music influenced nu jazz. Here are some feeds that discuss jazz both new and old.Related Top 10 Sources: Classical Music | Opera | Hip Hop | Divas| Latin Music

A few years ago, research disclosed that Louis Armstrong was not born on the Fourth of July,
1900, but a little more than a year later. No matter; Armstrong believed that Independence Day was his birthday and identified himself with the United States of America. As his career and popularity developed and the magnitude of...
